Frequently Asked Questions

Green Button is a North America-wide initiative being adopted by many utilities as part of an ongoing effort to provide their customers with better access to their energy usage information. Green Button allows you to download your detailed energy usage in a readable format. You can share this file with companies who are developing innovative tools to help you understand and analyze your energy consumption.

Green Button is part of Ontario’s efforts to encourage energy conservation and help people save on electricity costs. It gives you greater control over your energy data, allowing you to access and share your electricity consumption data in a standardized, secure manner. Companies are starting to develop innovative tools and software that visualize and analyze energy consumption around the Green Button standard so that you can use your data in the way that works best for you – without compromising your confidential information.

You do not need to be logged in to your PUC Customer Connect Account to access your data; you can sign up for free using information from your most recent bill. Once on our Green Button microsite, you can choose to do one or more of the following:

Download My Data (DMD) - The Green Button Download My Data standard enables PUC Distribution customers to download your electricity data in an industry-standard XML data format or CSV format.

Connect My Data (CMD) - The Green Button Connect My Data standard allows customers to authorize direct, secure transfer of their energy usage data to third parties that can assist them with managing and conserving energy. With this option, you can view a list of authorized Connect my Data third-party applications in the PUC Marketplace, and view or revoke third-party access to your consumption and/or billing information.

Your Green Button information is downloaded in a standard XML file format, so you can easily export your data to other applications, tools or software. You can also continue to use the spreadsheet friendly XLS and CSV download options which are better options for directly reviewing the data.

You can download history of up to 24 months of billing, consumption and transaction data.

You will have the ability to analyze your own detailed data, tracking usage patterns that may provide insights to help you save. You can also safely share it with other tools, such as mobile or web applications to visualize your energy consumption in an innovative way.

Please contact your third-party service provider to determine the best way to send them your XML file.

Due to the standardized Green Button format, third-party developers are able to quickly create and offer new products, services, and applications to meet this need giving customers more choice in applications to save money on energy.

Third Parties who wish to be registered and onboarded onto the Green Button Platform to be showcased as an available application in our Green Button marketplace, will be required to submit a registration form. You will receive notice of approval within 14 business days.
