PUC Crews Support Power Restoration in Southern Ontario After Helping U.S. Neighbours

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – April 4, 2025 — After assisting communities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula earlier this week, PUC crews are now shifting their focus to support ongoing storm recovery efforts in Southern Ontario. Our assistance has been formally requested, and we are pleased to contribute as part of the broader mutual aid response.

Since Monday, March 31, five PUC Powerline Technicians (PLTs) have been working tirelessly in Northern Michigan to help restore power to areas severely impacted by a recent ice storm. Despite the challenging conditions, including the use of snow machines to access remote locations, the team made significant progress in restoring power to affected customers, who treated our employees with overwhelming kindness and respect.

PUC was able to deploy crews to the United States following discussions with the Ontario Mutual Assistance Group (ONMAG), as utilities in Southern Ontario were still assessing the extent of the damage. Over the past week, we’ve been closely monitoring the storm systems, and now that the full scope has become clear, our support has been officially requested.

In response, two PUC PLTs departed early this morning for the Orillia area to assist with restoration efforts. Some of the crew members returning from Michigan arrived home just long enough to grab a change of clothes before heading straight to Orillia. Their dedication is a true testament to the commitment our employees show in supporting communities in need—wherever that may be. In total, six PUC Powerline Technicians will be deployed to Southern Ontario to help restore power to Ontarians as quickly and safely as possible.

“PUC is proud that our crews are volunteering to assist where they’re needed the most,” said Rob Brewer, President and CEO of PUC Services. “Our crews continue to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and a deep commitment to public service during these large-scale restoration efforts.”

PUC extends thanks to all utility workers across Ontario and beyond who are tirelessly working to restore service safely and efficiently.
