Stay Safe: Keep 10 Metres Away from Downed Power Lines and Report Them Immediately

Sault Ste. Marie, Ont (November 29th, 2024) - As Sault Ste. Marie continues to experience heavy snowfall,  PUC Services Inc reminds residents to prioritize safety and exercise caution, particularly around downed powerlines.  Accumulating snow, ice and strong winds can  create hazardous conditions, including power outages and fallen lines.

“Safety is our top priority,” says Jairus Patterson, Manager of Corporate Communications. “Downed powerlines are extremely dangerous. We urge everyone to stay at least 10 metres away from them and report any sightings immediately. Always assume any downed wire is live and never attempt to move it. Call our customer experience team immediately to report it”

Safety Tips During a Winter Storm

  1. Stay Away from Downed Powerlines
    • Always assume any downed line is live and dangerous. Maintain a safe distance of at least 10 metres.
    • Avoid touching anything in contact with the line, such as trees, fences, or vehicles.
  2. Report Hazards Immediately
    • Call PUC Services at 705-759-6500 to report downed lines or other electrical hazards.
    • If a line is sparking or poses an imminent danger, call 911.
  3. Prepare for Power Outages
    • Keep flashlights, batteries, and other emergency supplies readily available.
    • Never use generators or outdoor heaters indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  4. Limit Travel
    • Stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. Snow and ice can make conditions dangerous.
  5. Download MyPUC App to Report Outages
    • Please report all power outages via our MyPUC app. This will keep our phone lines clear for emergencies.

PUC crews are out in the field, working swiftly to repair outages and damage caused by the storm. Our team works around the clock to restore power and ensure the safety of our community. Please give our crews plenty of room when they are working to repair our equipment.
